🎧 What a Health Editor Discovered During Her 40-Day Home Detox (Part 1)
Apr 17, 2025Welcome to Practical Nontoxic Living, where we help you protect your joy and convenience while simplifying how to detox what you buy, own, and do from toxic chemicals, heavy metals, and radiation. We'll focus on the easy things you can control!
I’m Sophia Ruan Gushée, and today, we’re diving into Part 1 of a very relatable four-part conversation with Alexa Lardieri, who is Deputy Health Editor at DailyMail.com. Alexa joined the DailyMail.com US Health team in 2023. Prior to that, she worked at U.S. News & World Report. For nearly a decade, Alexa reported on politics, elections, education, and healthcare, including exclusive coverage of the Covid-19 pandemic in New York City.
Since 2023, however, Alexa has been reporting on health topics, including toxic chemicals lurking in our everyday lives. But when she decided to go through the Ruan Living 40-Day Home Detox program herself, she had “Aha!” moments that you'll learn more about in today's episode.
I'm sharing my conversation with Alexa over four episodes to simplify lessons you can learn to detox your home and lifestyle. At the end of this episode, I'll share the three key lessons that you can apply to your health and well-being.
Let’s get into it.
Simple Steps To Detox Your Home & Body
From today's introduction to Alexa's 40-Day Home Detox experience, the three lessons you can learn, if you didn't know them already are:
- "Unscented" products may still contain harmful chemicals. Chemicals are sometimes added to mask unpleasant odors of the product and it's practically impossible to know if they're safe. (US EPA 2016)
- Pets are at risk too. While humans have unique vulnerability to toxic chemicals, heavy metals, and electromagnetic fields (EMFs, or radiation), the younger the life, the higher the health risks can be. Pets, however, are vulnerable too! All life forms are. If you have a pet, you can apply lessons learned in the 40-Day Home Detox program to benefit your pets too. (Chelin et al, 2024, Microplastic presence in dog and human testis and its potential association with sperm count and weights of testis and epididymis, Toxicological Sciences)
- There are endless ways you can optimize your health and well-being. Even if you've been a health editor for years, including diving deep into the toxicity from household items, Ruan Living's 40-Day Home Detox program can still transform and empower you to make healthier choices.
Those are the key lessons that I want to highlight for you from this first of four episodes featuring DailyMail's health editor, Alexa.
Detox Your Diet
If you're new to Ruan Living or this Practical Nontoxic Living podcast, then please also note some things that Alexa had already done, which followers of Ruan Living's newsletter and the Practical Nontoxic Living podcast have heard many times before. These things include detoxing your pots and pans and food containers. So, if you haven't learned how to do that yet, checkout helpful links below to teach you more about this.
In the same section below, you can find links to resources mentioned in this episode, including related scientific studies and how to start your own 40-Day Detox.
40-Day Home Detox's Six Household Repeat Offenders
In the clip with Alexa, I listed five of the six Household Repeat Offenders that the 40-Day Home Detox program helps you eliminate from your home. But I couldn't remember one. The forgotten one is a big one, which I call "Resistant Chemicals" in the 40-Day Home Detox. This includes big categories of toxic chemicals. For example, PFAS, or Forever Chemicals, is a major target included under the umbrella term "Resistant Chemicals". Another major target when we hunt your home for "Resistant Chemicals" include chemical flame retardants. I spent years putting my heart and soul into creating the 40-Day Home Detox program, which is something I really wish I could have done much earlier in my life. It's never too late to benefit from it, but the sooner you start, the better off you'll be.
In the meantime, I hope you can choose one thing from today's episode to help you detox your home and lifestyle with wisdom and harmony.
