A Stroke of Insight
Mar 21, 2017Some of you may have heard of the book, My Stroke of Insight: A Brain Scientist's Personal Journey; or, perhaps you have seen the author, Dr. Jill Taylor, on The Oprah Show. Whether you have or not, you should check out the video below. Her 2008 presentation at a TED Conference is a thought-provoking reminder of the bliss that is possible to experience within our lifetime, if we so choose.
Dr. Jill Taylor is a Harvard-trained and published neuroanatomist who experienced a severe hemorrhage in the left hemisphere of her brain in 1996. On the afternoon of this rare form of stroke (AVM), she could not walk, talk, read, write, or recall any of her life. It took eight years for Dr. Jill to completely recover all of her functions and thinking ability. In her New York Times bestselling memoir, My Stroke of Insight: A Brain Scientist's Personal Journey, she shares her unique perspective into what it's like to have a stroke -- from that of a neuroanatomist as well as that of a stroke survivor. As she straddled the border between life and death as well as the effects of a damaged left hemisphere, she shares her enlightenment on life and nirvana.
"How many brain scientists have been able to study the brain from the inside out? I've gotten as much out of this experience of losing my left mind as I have in my entire academic career."-- Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor
Check out her compelling 2008 presentation in the video below. It should be a must-see for everyone (and her book is being adapted into a screenplay! Ron Howard will be the director and Jodi Foster may play Dr. Jill).
